What is Marshmallow?

Marshmallow is a plant native to the UK and has white or pinkish flowers, with soft leaves. It's long been used for medicinal reasons (as well as for culinary purposes). The roots and the leaves of the plant can be used for a range of purposes.

Why is Marshmallow used for animal health?

Marshmallow root is often used:
  • As a supplement to soothe and protect inflamed mucus membranes; and
  • In skincare lotions to help relieve sore skin

The leaves of the marshmallow plant are used for relieving:
  • Respiratory ailments. For example, to loosen catarrh.
  • Soothing the skin
  • Gastro-intestinal ailments like diarrhoea.

The active constituent in both the root and leaves are acidic polysaccharides.

What animals can benefit from Marshmallow?

Horses, ponies and donkeys can, as well as dogs, cats and other small animals such as rabbits.

Marshmallow root or leaves can usually be found as tinctures, powders or combined in supplements and skincare preparations with other herbs. It's essential that the right amount is given, and so always liaise with a professional veterinary surgeon/herbalist for specific advice for your individual animal.
